Taxonomy Description
An occupational therapy assistant is a person who has graduated from an occupational therapy assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or predecessor organizations, has successfully completed a period of supervised fieldwork experience required by the accredited occupational therapy assistant program, has passed a nationally recognized entry-level examination for occupational therapy assistants, and fulfills state requirements for licensure, certification, or registration. An occupational therapy assistant provides interventions under the supervision of an occupational therapist which emphasize the therapeutic use of everyday life activities (i.e., occupations) with individuals or groups for the purpose of facilitating participation in roles and situations and in home, school, workplace, community and other settings. Occupational therapy services are provided for the purpose of promoting health and wellness and are provided to those who have or are at risk for developing an illness, injury, disease, disorder, condition, impairment, disability, activity limitation, or participation restriction. NPI Validation Check Digit Calculation

The following table explains the step by step NPI number validation process using the ISO standard Luhn algorithm.

Start with the original NPI number, the last digit is the check digit and is not used in the calculation.
1578394987
Step 1: Double the value of the alternate digits, beginning with the rightmost digit.
25148698916
Step 2: Add all the doubled and unaffected individual digits from step 1 plus the constant number 24.
2 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 8 + 6 + 9 + 8 + 9 + 1 + 6 + 24 = 83
Step 3: Subtract the total obtained in step 2 from the next higher number ending in zero, the result is the check digit.
90 - 83 = 77

The NPI number 1578394987 is valid because the calculated check digit 7 using the Luhn validation algorithm matches the last digit of the original NPI number.
